Solar Eclipse 15th Jan 2010 Details, Precautions

The Annular Solar Eclipse of January 15 2010 will be visible across Africa, the Indian Ocean, India, Sri Lanka, and south-east Asia. The annular phase runs from 05:13:54 UT, when the eclipse begins in the Central African Republic, to the end of the eclipse on the Chinese Yellow Sea coast at 08:59:01 UT. The maximum eclipse is at 07:06:31 UT, when the annular phase will last just over 11 minutes.

The partial eclipse will be visible over eastern Africa, south-east Europe, the Middle East, and south-east Asia between 04:05:26 UT and 10:07:33 UT.

Overview

Please note that these maps are approximate. Check with reliable sources before making travel plans.

This map shows the path of the annular eclipse:

India

The path of the annular eclipse passes over the Maldives at around 07:24 UT; here, the eclipse path is down to 328km wide, but the duration will be almost 11 minutes on the center line. The track next reaches India; although the center line just misses the mainland, this should still be a spectacular sight for people in the south-west of the sub-continent. North-eastern SriLanka also has a good view, and the center line just clips land at 07:54 UT. The path is 323km wide here, and the eclipse will last over 10 minutes.

Asia

The annular eclipse touches land once more in Myanmar (Burma), at about 08:32 UT. The path here is 333km wide, but the duration by this
time has fallen to 8 minutes 49 seconds. The path then enters China, at about 08:41 UT, and crosses China. The eclipsed Sun begins to set
at 08:59:01 UT; but the remains of the eclipse will still be visible as the eclipse path reaches the sea near Qingdao, at around 08:54 UT.

 Eclipse Eye Safety

The first thing to remember about observing an eclipse is safety. A lunar eclipse -- an eclipse of the Moon -- is perfectly safe to watch with the naked eye; you're only looking at the Moon, at night, which is quite safe. A solar eclipse is potentially dangerous, however, because viewing a solar eclipse involves looking at the Sun, which can damage your eyesight.

The Danger of the Sun

A Solar Eclipse can be viewed safely with the naked eye only during the few brief seconds or minutes of a Total Solar Eclipse, when the Sun itself is completely obscured by the Moon.Partial eclipses, Annular eclipses, and the partial phases of total eclipses are never safe to watch without taking special precautions.

Even when 99% of the Sun's surface is obscured during the partial phases of a total eclipse, the remaining crescent is intensely bright -- just as intense as at any other time -- and cannot be viewed safely without eye protection. Do not attempt to observe the partial or annular phases of any eclipse
with the naked eye. Failure to use appropriate filtration may result in permanent eye damage or blindness!

There is no pain when the retina is being burned, and the resulting visual symptoms do not occur until at least several hours after the injury has occurred - by which time it is far too late.

Direct Viewing

It is never safe to look directly at the Sun except during a total eclipse; a partial or annular eclipse, even when the Sun is mostly covered, can still cause permanent eye damage, even though you might not feel any discomfort. Looking at the Sun through any kind of optical aid (binoculars, a telescope, or even a camera's viewfinder) is extremely dangerous, and can cause permanent
blindness.

Sunglasses do not provide anything like adequate protection, as they do not block the wavelengths of light which are likely to damage your eyes, or reduce the intensity of the visible light sufficiently. Various other ad-hoc solar filters, such as welder's goggles or using fully exposed and developed black-and-white negatives, are sometimes discussed, but unless you know exactly what you are doing, can be extremely dangerous, and so can't be recommended. Properly designed solar filters, made and certified to appropriate national safety standards, should be safe. A commonly available type uses aluminized mylar, in a dual sandwich with the aluminium on the inside. (This means that you're actually looking through a double layer of metal.) However, there does exist a risk with using viewing glasses if they aren't in perfect condition; if in doubt, throw them away.

Indirect Viewing

Viewing the Sun indirectly, by projecting its image onto a screen, is far safer. You can make a projector with a simple pinhole, or with binoculars or a telescope, as described in Observing Eclipses. However, never look through the projector -- only look at the image on the screen.

Note that a screen refers to a matte surface, such as a white sheet, or a piece of paper, so that the Sun's image can be seen by anyone looking
at it from any angle. Looking at a reflection of the Sun in any shiny surface is basically the same as looking directly at the Sun.

Eclipse Lunacy

There's been such hysteria -- allbeit well-intentioned -- stirred up about eye damage, that many people are convinced that it is specifically solar eclipses that cause eye damage; that is, at any other time of year, looking at the Sun is OK. This is not true. Looking at the Sun at any time for more than a second or two can cause permanent eye damage.

Finally, I've heard some truly daft ideas for eclipse viewing, such as looking through a sheet of Perspex, or in a reflection in a bucket of water. I have no idea where these come from, but these are not safe! If you can see the Sun clearly and brightly, whether directly, in a reflection, or via Perspex, then it's dangerous.

Top 10 Stars We Love To Gossip About

Shahid Kapoor and Vidya Balan

Everyone wants to know everything about a heartbroken lad. So when Shahid Kapoor, fresh out of his break-up with Kareena Kapoor was spotted taking Vidya Balan home one night, it became the story everyone wanted to follow. Even a year and half after we first published it, Vidya and Shahid's ride home one night remains the most popular gossip on our site. How we wish though Vidya would wear some better clothes each time she shows up.

Mallika Sherawat

The piece of gossip that put Mallika Sherawat at the number two spot was that of her playing a sex-starved woman in a Telugu film. Must confess many of us here were surprised with the results when they appeared. But we're guessing sex-starved Mallika is part of many men's fantasies.

Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan

Think of it, Jab We Met is perhaps the only legitimate hit Kareena Kapoor can boast of. The success came seven years after Kareena's debut Border hit the screens. But you got to give it to Kareena for the way she's managed to stay in the limelight despite it. When she broke off with Shahid Kapoor and hooked up with Saif Ali Khan, it was hot news. Saif Ali Khan too managed to make the most of the situation. From being a supporting actor for the longest time, Saif is now producing a full-length movie! And that is not bad, not too bad at all.

Shilpa Shetty

Big Brother can do big things for you. Shilpa Shetty learnt this quite late in her career. But the sexy girl made the most of the situation and cashed in on all the hype. Sadly though her publicity machinery didn't spare many of us – even Juicy Mausi – who finally vented out her displeasure.

Freida Pinto

Everyone wants to know ugly truths. And when these stories are about an up and coming star who's making waves in Hollywood, hell yeah! After Slumdog Millionaire, Freida Pinto reportedly dumped her boyfriend for a glitzy career abroad. Needless to say the gory details about her past life made for juicy headlines in Mumbai and Hollywood.

Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan

Earlier this year Aamir Khan toppled Shah Rukh Khan in the Filmfare Power List. That, we guess, was enough for the media to go all out and start speculating about the two. Many suggested that there were serious rifts between the two Khans, which were now widening. Things took an ugly turn when in interview to a Mumbai tabloid, Aamir Khan took pot shots at Shah Rukh. However Juicy Mausi's sources told her that all was well between the two! And this was MUCH before the famed press conference they addressed together.

Aishwarya Rai and Vivek Oberoi

Just if you think that the much-married Aishwarya Rai Bachchan doesn't stir emotions in the hearts of Indian men, think again. Her much-published affair with Vivek Oberoi is still on the top of many minds. When the two almost came face-to-face at the Filmfare Awards function recently, it was enough to raise the curiosity levels of our users.

Priyanka Chopra

Many industry insiders insist that the whole Priyanka Chopra-Shahid Kapoor link-up is just a publicity gimmick. In fact we are also told that Shahid has been rather miffed with the way the whole thing is being managed. But Priynaka doesn't seem to care less. Shahid and Priyanka's latest movie Kaminey is up for release and looks like Piggy Chops is enjoying all the attention she's getting!

Amrita Rao

It's funny how a polka-dotted dress can bring you in the limelight. We're talking about the little dress Amrita Rao wore in My Name is Anthony Gonsalves. Suddenly after that Amrita was hot property. The film bombed at the box office. But Amrita was here to stay. The lesson we learnt was this: when the girl-next-door decides to shed her clothes, she WILL grab all eyeballs.

Sikh Journalist Throws Shoe at Home Minister Chidambaram - News - Pictures

New Delhi: A large crowd gathered at the Tughlak road police station on Tuesday after a Sikh journalist was detained for hurling a shoe at Home minister P Chidambaram at a press conference here.

The crowd gathered when they heard that a Sikh journalist from a Hindi daily, Jarnail Singh, had been taken to the police station after he had been detained.

Some members of the crowd raised slogans in support of Singh while a number of mediamen and curious onlookers gathered around the police station complex. Singh was later released by police after a brief detention.

Singh's brother, his lawyer Sunita Tiwari and one of his colleagues were also at the police station.

"Whatever the journalist has done is appropriate. He has vented out the anguish of the Sikhs against all those who perpetrated the anti-Sikh riots," said Babu Singh Dukhiya who heads an NGO, National 1984 Victims Justice and Welfare society.

Singh had hurled a shoe at Chidambaram to protest against CBI's clean chit to senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler accused in 1984 anti- Sikh riots case, but it missed the target. Chidambaram said "I forgive him" after the incident occurred at the AICC headquarters on Tuesday afternoon.

Aishwarya Rai files for Divorce (Breaking News)

The Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie of Bollywood have run their race – the marriage that grabbed the most headlines in the history of Indian media has broken up!

Aishwarya Rai has filed for divorce on grounds of irreconcilable differences. But insiders say that Aishwarya had been talking to Abhishek for long time regarding kids and Abhi wasn’t too keen on the idea to begin with. The sparks had begun almost two years ago when Ash attended a screening of Aamir Khan’s ‘Taare Zameen Par’ and expressed a wish to have at least two kids, before she gets too old.

But Abhishek, who is younger than Ash, disagreed and stormed off in a cab leaving Ash heartbroken. This was reportedly just the start of the long, sad history of fights between the couple. There were reports of friction between Ash and Abhi on the sets of ‘Sarkar Raj’, and also on the sets of ‘Laga chunari me daag’ where Abhishek had to hurry back home after arguments over the phone with Ash.

Aishwarya, who is the highest paid Bollywood actress ever, plans to move out of the Bachchan house and stay with her mother. Amitabh Bachchan, her father in law is quite upset with the news. “I am devastated,” Big B said to reporters, “Ash is our ‘Bahu’ and there is still some hope of salvaging the marriage.”

The Ash-Abhi divorce will jeopardize a number of films where they appear together – Mani Ratnam’s ‘Raavan’ which nears completion has been put on hold due to this unexpected news. ‘Abhimaan’ which was to begin shooting this May has been canceled, and the production house has reported a loss of Rs 120 Crore. A third installment in the ‘Sarkar’ series is under threat, due to Ash’s disinterest in working with the Bachchans.
